Kevin Henkes

The fourth of five children, Kevin Henkes was born in 1960 in Racine, Wisconsin. Knowing at an early age he wanted to be an artist, he was encouraged by his family, friends, and teachers. While a junior in high school, he decided to combine his love of books and his artistic talents by writing and illustrating children's books.

His determination to succeed in his chosen profession resulted in his flying to New York City in the summer of 1980. A self-assured 19-year-old, he was armed with a return ticket, three portfolios and a list of publisher contacts. He returned home a week later with a contract from Greenwillow Books. Greenwillow is still publishing his books today.

Not only has Henkes remained loyal to Greenwillow, but also to his editor, Susan Hirschman. Their relationship has resulted in the publishing of two dozen remarkable books and numerous awards, including a 1994 Caldecott Honor for Owen.

Henkes currently makes his home in Madison, Wisconsin, where his studio is a converted upstairs bedroom. His wife, Laura, is also an artist and assists her husband by critiquing his work. Her artwork has graced the cover of Henkes' novel Sun and Spoon, and she has recently illustrated a picture book written by her husband, OH!
